Kuruman farmer Freddie Markram started running commercial cattle in 1984. In time, the weaning mass achieved by a friend’s Charolais cross cattle convinced him to use Charolais sires on his mainly Brahman crosses. His experience as an auctioneer had also taught him how popular Charolais crosses were with feedlots.
In 1988 he bought eight female Charolais and a nine-month-old bull. He had no intention of becoming a stud breeder. The plan was to save costs and improve the herd by breeding quality sires for his own use. However, the young bull he had bought for R13 000 from Corder Pedigree Charolais Stud changed all his plans.
As this sire grew and developed, Freddie realized he was exceptional and decided he should give the bull a change to prove himself in the show ring. The once nine-month-old bull, CPC Leviation, did not disappoint him. He earned Freddie several top class awards as champion on several agricultural shows. In 1991 CPC Leviation became the SA Charolais Champion sire.
The bull was proving to be an outstanding breeder as well. He has already produced a reserve SA Junior Champion heifer and all four of his daughters have done well as the national Charolais Champions. Leviation so impressed Freddie that he bought his dam as well. She has been inseminated with British Charolais semen and embryo flushed.
Today Freddie Markram consider himself to be both a commercial cattleman and a Charolais Stud Breeder – all thanks to CPC Leviation and the fact that he knew quality when he saw it.
